The Vocal Gym: Where Is It?

You may be asking yourself what exactly we mean by “Vocal Gym”. It does sound like a workout place, but… for your voice? Correct. The Vocal Gym is where you go to work out and train our vocal instrument.
So, when you want to use the Vocal Gym, do you have to have a membership to go into a building or a specific place? No. The Vocal Gym is wherever your instrument is, and that is always with you. This means that the Vocal Gym is not a place, but rather a mindset. It’s all about the training mentality, rather than being in performance mood. It’s about working on technical details. So, you can basically train your voice literally anywhere you feel comfortable to do so.
Sometimes though, a private or secluded space might help us feel more comfortable to do our vocal exercises. Especially when we struggle with certain exercises or are honing in on those harder skills that we are currently working on. In these situations, a private room makes us feel less exposed to judgement and therefore grants a more relaxed approach and allows us to focus better. However, you CAN vocalize anywhere.
If you need a few ideas, here you go:
- Doing Flexibility Exercises while reading a book in your room.
- Articulation Exercises while going for a walk. In fact, when you sing your songs while doing cardio (like walking, hiking or running) it helps to improve your breath management.
- Intonation Exercises in your car on your way to work. When stuck in traffic is also a GREAT time to sing along to all your favorite songs without being interrupted. 🙂
I know these are just a few ideas, so, see where YOU find your Vocal Gym.
Sing On!
