The Vocal Gym for Homeschool is a Carnegie credit-qualifying online course that offers self-paced, interactive learning for homeschooled high school students (ages 12+) interested in singing. The course utilizes the highest U.S. State standards for classroom Artistic Processes and Blooms Taxonomies integrated throughout the curriculum. 

Based on the only vocal technique awarded with a U.S Patent, The Vocal Gym revolves around the 7 Dimensions of Singing (Flexibility, Breathing, Intonation, Range, Tone, Articulation, and Strength) which starts with creating a personalized vocal profile for each student. This profile is then used to tailor the exercise, lesson, activity, and quiz experiences within the course to the individual student’s strengths and weaknesses.

The course is adaptable to all skill levels and DOES NOT REQUIRE students to read music or have any previous knowledge of music theory.

TRACK YOUR CHILD'S PROGRESS

As the student works through the course, their vocal profile will be updated to reflect their progress, while the course continues to challenge them and support their development. This personalized approach to vocal training is what makes the Vocal Gym course unique and effective for each individual student.

Throughout this process, parents can monitor their child’s progress through the Parent Portal, where they can view the student’s progress, time spent practicing, and documentation needed to show their work.

EARNING A FINE ARTS CARNEGIE CREDIT

To earn a Fine Arts Carnegie Credit, a student typically needs to complete a course of study or program in a Fine Arts subject, such as music, theatre, dance, or visual arts. The exact requirements can vary depending on the state and school district, but generally, students must log a certain number of hours of study and demonstrate their knowledge and skills through assessments, projects, and other forms of evaluation.

The Vocal Gym’s self-paced program can help high school students earn a Fine Arts or Extracurricular Credit in all 50 U.S. States. Students can log 150+ hours of learning and vocal development per year, which can be monitored by parents through the Parent Portal. The course includes quizzes, exercises, lessons, and activities, along with a certificate of completion and documentation needed to show progress and hours logged. Richard Fink IV

Richard is the founder of Throga, a #1 Best-Selling Author in vocal education, and recognized as the “world’s leading online vocal coach” by the Wall Street Journal. He has worked with singers all around the world, including multi-platinum selling artists, actors, politicians, and Broadway stars. As a vocalist, Richard is an award-winning singer and a 3x Guinness World Records holder. Career highlights include co-writing songs for artists such as Josh Groban and Michael Jackson, judging international competitions, coaching at Talent Camp at Universal Studios, and teaching Masterclasses at various Universities in the USA and Australia.

Laurence Tallman

Laurence is an experienced music educator who has been teaching for over 30 years. He received his BM and MM in Music Education from the Crane School of Music and taught there for 6 years. He has written over 200 works as a composer and received the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra award for Outstanding Music Educator in the area of Classroom Music. He has also served as the NYSSMA chairperson for High School Classroom Music and was on the Content Advisory Panel for the New York State Standards for the Arts.

Jim Bostock

Over the past 20 years, Jim has worked with over 60,000 patients and developed a unique understanding in nerve release for both singers and athletes around the world. Jim's training includes an undergraduate honors in Exercise Physiology, a postgraduate in Physiotherapy, a Masters of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy and is trained in two unique methods of manual therapy. Most recently, Jim has developed the Vocal Freedom program to help people heal from Spasmodic Dysphonia.

Andrew Phan

Andrew is first and foremost a storyteller. After completing his Bachelor of Music and degree in Film & Television Production by the Sydney Institute of Technology. Andrew went on to be a travel writer for the Sydney Morning Herald. His love of story has lead him all over the world, working and implementing tried and tested storytelling methodology to create empathetic and powerful messaging and stories. Andrew also played a pivotal role as the editor for the Amazon Best-selling book, 7 Dimensions of Singing, and has been a vital contributor to further developing the technique.

Kerri Hardwick

Kerri has a rich musical background and over 30 years of vocal training and experience. She taught Music and Voice at Elementary/Middle schools for 5 years, with a total of 17 years as a Vocal Instructor. Kerri continues her passion for voice as a Worship Leader and as a prominent performer of the Arts for Learning of Virginia. Most recently, Kerri started working as an Adjunct Professor of Voice for Regent University. She loves to help singers of all ages and levels grow in their passion for singing.

Anita Houser

Anita has over 30 years collective experience performing as a singer and pianist. She has performed in musical theatre productions, R&B and Jazz bands, choirs, and has led ministry programs as a Music Director in churches for several years. Anita earned a Bachelor of Music degree with honors (Magna Cum Laude) from Spelman College with additional training at College-Conservatory of Music. Anita utilizes her diverse background in education, music, mindfulness, martial arts, intuition, and nutrition into her teaching style.

Alysia Fink

Alysia is a well-rounded artist with a background in singing and performing arts. She is currently an elementary school teacher in Florida and previously owned the Bergen School of the Arts and served as Music Director at a local church in New York. Alysia has 16 years of dance experience and served in the Army Reserve before pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of Arizona, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. As a singer, she has been in many bands throughout her life and shared the stage with famous artists like Charlie Daniels and Sarah Buxton.

Brigitte Krahn

Brigitte is a singer and musician from Paraguay with extensive music education and performance experience, offering voice lessons in English, Spanish, and German. She began studying music at the age of 5 and became a certified Music Theory and Classical Piano Teacher at 16. Throughout her career, she has honed her skills singing in choirs, bands, and as a soloist in various settings. Brigitte is also studying Publicity and PR and aims to use her knowledge to assist voice educators and artists in promoting themselves to reach their target audience.

Jorge Sanchez

Jorge is a voice instructor from Huaraz, Peru who provides lessons in both English and Spanish. He has a passion for singing and music since childhood but initially lacked the confidence to pursue formal training. Eventually, the “what if” feeling became overwhelming and Jorge started to research the voice, which led him to explore over 30 different singing programs. With a background in engineering, Jorge brings a technical approach to voice lessons and helps students overcome vocal challenges from multiple angles. He aims to inspire and improve his students' singing abilities.

Anna Rizzo-Tasone

Anna is a seasoned vocal and performance coach with 20+ years of experience. She started studying classical music and piano/voice at 6 and has extensive session singing experience, providing vocals and harmonies to artists in a side range of musical styles. Anna's voice has also been featured in many commercials and film soundtracks. She is also a singer-songwriter, having released 3 albums with La Collectiv and a solo EP. With a background in public relations, Anna brings valuable PR experience to her role as a coach and provides guidance to her students in both music and performance.

Cesar De La Rosa

Cesar is a multi-talented performer from Puerto Rico who has honed his skills from a young age. He has received awards for his singing, acting, and dancing abilities, including “Best Solo Performance,” “Best Duet Performance,” and “Best Actor in A Play/Musical” in Thespian competitions. Cesar has also works with major entertainment companies such as Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld. Additionally, Cesar has performed in national talent competitions such as American Idol and The X-Factor, and was the runner-up for Telemundo's Yo Soy El Artista.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How can my child earn a high school Fine Arts credit with this course?

To earn a full credit for Fine Arts or elective in a single school year, a student needs to complete the main course, do several activities, and practice vocal exercises for 4-5 hours per week for a 30-week period. Alternatively, they can also stretch it out over a few years of high school if they prefer.

What exactly will my child be doing?

The course has plenty of resources for the student to engage with, including reading material, videos, interactive assessments, quizzes, activities, vocal exercises, and assignments. The progress and learning of the student will be tracked automatically, and there are also suggestions for documentaries and additional assignments available in the Homeschool Toolbox for further exploration.

Are there any additional materials to purchase?

The only requirements for the course are a computer or mobile device with internet access and the student's voice. Some of the optional activities may require a subscription to a streaming service like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, or Disney+.

How are Quizzes graded?

There are 11 quizzes integrated into the curriculum. To ensure your child’s understanding of the material, they must get 80% correct in order to progress to the next lesson, with unlimited tries. You will have access to the Quiz Keys in the Homeschool Toolbox if they get stuck.

My child is a complete beginner. Will they actually learn how to sing with this course?

Yes, the Homeschool Vocal Gym Course is suitable for singers of all skill levels, including beginners. The exercises are designed to be customizable, ensuring that there is always a suitable level of challenge to maximize the training benefits, regardless of the student's starting point.

Do students have to be able to read music to take this course?

Although the Vocal Gym makes occasional references to music theory and notation (musical scoring), students are not required to be able to read music or have a background in music theory in to fully benefit from the program.

What age is the Homeschool Vocal Gym course best for?

The Homeschool Vocal Gym Course employs techniques that are safe and beneficial for singers of all ages, but the lessons are specifically designed for high school students between the ages of 12 and 19.

What if I have questions? Can I talk to the course instructors?

Yes, support is available. If you or your child does not have a teacher or organization for direct support, you can reach out to a Certified Throga Instructor by posting your question in the private Facebook Group or by searching and asking questions in the Help Center. If the question requires more specialized expertise, it will be immediately forwarded to one of our instructors for direct assistance.

Do I have to monitor my student's course progress?

The courses are designed to encourage interaction between you and your child for a more productive learning experience, but it is not a requirement. Regardless of your level of involvement, you will always have access to monitor your child's course progress, assignment completion, and quiz grades.

Can I use the course for more than one child?

The course is intended for individual use, and the number of hours and completed assignments are tracked in the Parent Portal. However, families with multiple children enrolled in the Homeschool Vocal Gym can receive a significant discount.
