This assignment is a creative way to assist with the reinforcing of anatomy used in singing, specific to each dimension. Your homeschooler will actually create a song reviewing the anatomy specific to one of the dimensions. Once complete, it should be performed either on video or directly to you for review. The PDF provides an overview, a suggested procedure, and additional options. Remember to encourage the use of the included Glossary course to review pronunciation of the anatomy terms as well.
Ideally, a facilitated discussion (with guided questions below) could bring in the artistic process of Reflecting and Responding. After a performance, ask the following:
- “Did the song accurately review the anatomy connected to their chosen dimension?”
- “What other anatomy is specific to this dimension?”
- “What elements of the song did you enjoy the most, and why?”
- “Besides the lyrics, what elements of the song will help you best remember the anatomy for that particular dimension?”
- “What were some of the challenges in composing your song? What are some strategies that you could use in the future to assist with these challenges?”
Though this assignment is designed to be implemented by an individual, it works most effectively when compositions are shared. To do so, consider uploading a recording (audio or video) to the Vocal Gym Facebook group. This allows your homeschooler to generate, sort, and select a wider range of ideas.
NOTE: Though challenging and time consuming, reinforcing learning through the artistic process of creating is one of the most valuable experiences for retention and for investment in learning. It is worth the time and effort, and most students find an intrinsic joy in being able to create an original work and perform it (not to mention reinforcing these sophisticated forms of musical expression).
