Guide
This assignment has your homeschooler temporarily step outside of the Vocal Gym mentality to explore artistic expression and make the correlation between tone of voice (tone quality) and emotional intention while singing (feeling tone). It allows them to explore the manipulation of tone to express emotion within a song (either its original intent or a different emotional variant).
The procedure of the assignment is detailed in the PDF. To summarize, your homeschooler will select a familiar song and follow these steps:
- They will choose one of ten emotions without you knowing the selection: Sad, Happy, Frustrated, Bored, Angry, Tired, Disgusted, Surprised, Afraid, and In Love.
- They will turn away from you so that you are unable to see their facial expressions while using the same lyrics, melody, tempo, and key as the original song.
- Call out the emotion you feel they are intending to express as soon as you determine it.
- If you guessed correctly, they will repeat the exercise by selecting a different emotion and performing it with that intent using the same lyrics, melody, tempo, and key.
- If you guessed incorrectly, they will try again while exploring new and different ways to express the intended emotion via tonal quality.
- Repeat the procedure until all ten emotions have been explored.
